CHANGING PERSPECTIVE: Ocotillo Wind
Ocotillo Wind is a 265MW project built with 112 wind turbines along Interstate 8 near the community of Ocotillo, California. Sited on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, the project has seen significant community support and opposition throughout its history. These BLM lands also support an active motocross and ATV community, a substantial part of the local economy. Built and commissioned in 2012 and 2013, Ocotillo Wind has experienced several mechanical problems, including two collapsed wind turbines, one in 2016 and one in 2021, which shut down operations to inspect all wind turbines thoroughly. As of January 2023, Ocotillo Wind is again in full operation.
