NICARAGUA: Portrait Pairs, 1981 & 2001
This portrait pair series comes from my documentary work in Nicaragua in 1981 and 2001.
In 1981, soon after the Sandinista Revolution, I spent several months focusing on social, political, and economic changes in Nicaragua’s rural communities for my MFA photography thesis. In 2001, I returned to the same communities to reconnect with individuals and families I had met twenty years earlier.
Each portrait pair tells a story - sometimes simple, sometimes complex. Some reveal growth and a movement from childhood to adulthood. Others reveal a loss of energy, spirit, or life during two decades of hardship.
