IRONWORKERS: Bausch & Lomb
When Bausch & Lomb decided to build a new world headquarters in Rochester, New York, in 1994, I approached them to support a fine art and documentary photo project about the building’s construction. They enthusiastically agreed, and I began photographing as workers laid the foundation. I gained 24/7 access to the work site, which meant walking beams during the work week while cranes swung new iron into position, and quiet Sunday mornings with twenty-four inches of fresh snow covering the site. On the 11th floor, once the concrete floors were poured but no walls enclosed the building, I built a north light studio for a series of portraits of the Ironworkers. This series is a small sampling from the larger project..
